This month’s book is A Volga Tale by Guzel Yakhina.
“A Volga Tale” by Guzel Yakhina is a historical fiction novel set in the Volga German colonies of Russia, focusing on Jakob Bach, a timid schoolteacher who is tasked with tutoring the daughter of a wealthy landowner, Klara, leading to a forbidden love affair that unfolds against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution and the subsequent upheaval and displacement of the Volga German community; the story explores themes of love, loss, identity, and the power of storytelling as Jakob, forced into exile, finds solace in creating fantastical tales to connect with his daughter.
